Usually, children’s clothes are made with polyester. Polyester can be dangerous as it is made from oil and undergoes processing with a lot of harmful chemicals and toxins.
Sometimes, clothes are made with non-organic cotton or other unsafe materials.
Non-organic cotton could be dangerous. Some believe it is the dirtiest crop in the world as lots of chemicals, such as insecticides and pesticides, are used to make it. These can cause health problems.

What Chemicals May Be Present In Baby Clothing
Although thousands of harmful chemicals are used, we’ve listed some of the most common and dangerous ones used in the production of clothes below:
1. Phthalates
The most used plasticizers, phthalates are organic chemical compounds derived from petroleum. Phthalates are used in rubber, artificial leather, PVC, and some dyes in the textile industry.
This toxic chemical goes into the body via inhalation, through mucous membranes and the skin via direct contact.
It can cause various health problems such as hormone disorders in men, birth defects, liver and kidney problems, endocrine system disorders, and respiratory problems. Babies and children are particularly susceptible to phthalates [6].
You should avoid buying children’s clothes with big printed pictures, as phthalates are often used in plastisol printing. This chemical is regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). The CPSIA requires manufacturers to demonstrate that their products do not contain prohibited levels of phthalates.
2. Alkylphenols
This group includes nonylphenol ethoxylate. They are used for dyeing fabrics and washing colored fibers and can be found in clothing imported from China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
It enters the body through the skin and can damage the endocrine and reproductive system, and cause sexual dysfunction.
3. Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs)
PFCs are man-made chemicals used to make clothes stain-proof and waterproof. One of the most popular PFCs is perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS).
According to research, they can negatively affect hormones and cause growth defects, reproductive problems, and liver damage. Although these dangerous chemicals are under strict regulations, they are still used in children’s clothes as they are stain-proof and waterproof.
4. Dyes
Very few dyes are harmless. The most used are the azo dyes. These toxins break down during use, releasing cancer-causing aromatic amines. Toxic dyes can also cause mutations.
5. Formaldehyde
Often used to dye wool, this chemical has heavy antibacterial properties but is a strong allergen. It can cause rashes, headaches, and burning sensations in the throat, eyes, and skin.
6. Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs)

7. Organotin Compounds
These compounds are used as an antifungal agent in consumer products as well as in the production of socks, shoes, and sportswear.

The EU has banned products containing more than 0.1% of this compound.
8. Heavy Metals
In the production of clothes, heavy metals are used to create dyes, colors, and pigments.
