In the first few years of life, your child will spend a lot of time wearing diapers and use, on average, 2,500 diapers a year. As they come into contact with your child’s skin for long periods of time every day, diapers can harm your child if they are contaminated with harmful chemicals.

The Danger Of Disposable Diapers

Researchers from France, between 2016 and 2018, tested 23 different nappies on sale in France. After testing, they observed traces of hazardous chemicals linked to cancer, dermatitis, reproductive development problems, and other issues in diapers [1].

Other research has also detected phthalates in baby diapers [2]. These chemicals are endocrine disruptors. They disrupt the hormone system, potentially causing reproductive problems such as low sperm count and the birth defect hypospadias.

To fully understand the health risk of disposable diapers, we need to look at what they are made of and what chemicals they contain.

What Is An Average Diaper Made Of?

Let’s take a closer look at the different layers in diapers, what they are made of, and what is their main function.

The average disposable diaper has the following layers:

1. Top Sheet (Skin Contact)

This part of the diaper comes in direct contact with the baby’s skin. The topsheet is crafted to transfer fluids to the acquisition distribution layer (ADL).

In most diapers, this layer is made from petroleum-based material, polypropylene (PP). Polypropylene is a plastic that is not biodegradable but considered safe for your baby’s skin.

Fortunately, there is an alternative for petroleum-based material in the topsheet, Bamboo. Bamboo fibers are an eco-friendly, naturally organic, and biodegradable material which is also hypoallergenic, antibacterial, and breathable.

2. Diaper Acquisition Distribution Layer (ADL)

ADL sits below the topsheet and above the absorbent core. Its role is in receiving liquid from the topsheet and quickly transferring urine to the absorbent core below. In other words, it continues to bring urine away from the baby.

This layer in a diaper may contain polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, rayon, cotton.

3. The Absorbent Core

The most important layer, the absorbent core, also known as the storage layer, absorbs the liquid and locks it in place.

This layer is typically made from two types of material:

A) Wood Pulp is intended to absorb wetness. In order to make the fibers soft, fluffy and more absorbent, the wood pulp goes through a multi-step purification process called bleaching. However, this process can leave behind small amounts of dioxins, highly toxic chemicals which are bad for both the environment and human health.

Nowadays, companies use 2 standard bleaching methods that are considered safe:

Elemental Chlorine-Free (ECF). The wood pulp is bleached with chlorine dioxide instead of chlorine gas. The ECF bleaching process should prevent the formation of dioxins or reduce them. This method is more commonly used as it makes the diapers cheaper to produce. This method is OK, but we strongly prefer diapers that are made using the Totally Chlorine-Free method.

Totally Chlorine-Free (TCF). This method is the best as it uses no chlorine-based bleaching agents. Instead, it uses safer methods that don’t produce dioxins, such as peroxide or ozone-based bleaching. We strongly recommend choosing diapers that are marked TCF.

B) Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP), usually sodium polyacrylate.

This substance is found in all disposable diapers, so if you want to avoid it, you will have to choose a non-disposable cloth alternative.

Sodium polyacrylate is part of the diaper’s core, but it can still leak through the lining of the diaper which can leave small crystals on your baby’s skin and irritate your baby’s airways if inhaled.

4. Backsheet (Waterproof layer to prevent leakage)

This layer is most often made with a petroleum-based plastic or plastic-treated material. But this layer also can be made with bamboo fiber.

Pay attention to all ingredients in the diapers you purchase and try to choose diapers that are made with the safest methods and eco-friendly and non-toxic materials.

What Chemicals Should You Avoid In Disposable Diapers?

What exact toxins are hidden in diapers, and how can they affect your baby’s health?

The next chemicals on our list are very commonly found in average disposable diapers:

1. CHLORINE

When chlorine is used in the production of diapers, dangerous toxins that we have already mentioned are left behind, that is, dioxins. These can have many different negative effects on health and the environment.

Dioxins can harm your child’s development, affect their liver function, reproductive system, immunity, disrupt their hormones, and potentially cause cancer [3].

Nowadays, more and more companies have started making diapers using the totally chlorine-free method (TCF) after they understand the possible negative effects of chlorine in diapers.

If a company claims to be simply “chlorine-free” this most likely means their diapers are only free of elemental chlorine instead of actually being totally chlorine-free. So remember to do your own research!

2. DYES

Dyes are often added to disposable diapers. On the exterior, dyes are used in vibrant cartoon designs to enhance the diaper experience, while on the interior, dyes can indicate the superabsorbent areas of the diaper in the form of stripes or patterns.

Dyes used in diapers are usually considered safe, but there is still the possibility for them to trigger allergic reactions. If your baby has a sudden reaction or persistent rash where the diaper dye comes in contact with the skin, you should consider choosing diapers made with natural materials and without any patterns.

So, choosing brands with minimal or no print means less exposure to synthetic and potentially toxic inks and paints on your baby.

3. FRAGRANCE

Synthetic fragrances are the main source of toxic chemicals in disposable diapers. The FDA does not regulate the use of fragrances in diapers, meaning brands can include all kinds of chemical substances listed only as ‘fragrance’ on the packaging.

Perfume is a mixture of various synthetic chemicals and is one of the main allergens that can cause asthma attacks or eczema. These fragrances are non-organic and contain citral compounds, which might be familiar as they are the scent of the essence commonly found in orange and lemon oils. Studies show that when citral compounds are heated above 23 ° C, a dangerous reaction can happen. As you know, diapers are used for feces, the temperature of which is normally equal to body temperature, which is much higher than the indicated temperature for a reaction that can cause a painful rash and allergic symptoms as well as breathing problems.

The risk is not justified, as aromatized diapers do not eliminate all odor, but harm your baby’s health, so diapers without fragrances should be preferred.

4. LOTIONS

Manufacturers of disposable diapers claim the lotion is used as a protective barrier and can be made from pharmaceutical grade petroleum jelly, stearic alcohol and aloe.

Petroleum jelly is considered a safe ingredient that is widely used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. But some parents are concerned with petroleum jelly quality, as it comes into contact with the baby’s skin.

Petrolatum, a petroleum product, can be tainted with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Research has linked exposure to PAHs, such as through extended contact with skin, to cancer. Resultantly, it has been classified as a carcinogen by the European Union, and its use in cosmetics has been restricted. Additionally, PAHs in petrolatum can result in allergies and skin problems.

To minimize the potential negative effects of petrolatum on the baby’s body, if possible, minimize the use of disposable diapers containing any lotions. It is important to know that healthy baby skin, up to a certain age, does not require special cosmetics and moisturization.

5. PHTHALATES

Phthalates such as DEHP and DBP are very common in many diapers. Phthalates are utilized to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics soft and they are also used as solvents in cosmetics and other products.

For example, phthalates can be used in disposable diapers to help create a waterproof outer liner, in addition to being used in the dyes, glues, or synthetic fragrances in diapers. As they are not chemically bonded to plastic very well, they are constantly released into the air or leached in liquids.

The harm of phthalates has been proven by a number of studies [4]. Here are some of their results: they have a potentially toxic effect on the developing endocrine and reproductive systems, which infants are especially vulnerable to, and they can damage the liver, kidneys, and lungs. It has also been proven that phthalates are associated with the occurrence of such diseases as asthma, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, type II diabetes, low IQ, nervous system development problems, behavioral problems, autism spectrum disorders, changes in reproductive development, and male fertility issues.

We recommend that you choose those brands that openly declare the absence of phthalates in their disposable diapers and mark this on the packaging.

6. LATEX

Many people are allergic to latex. Symptoms of a latex allergy include skin problems such as itching, wounds, redness, and swelling. Sometimes an allergy to latex can cause anaphylaxis, occasionally being fatal. An allergic reaction can be caused by skin contact with latex and also by inhaling the particles which then come into contact with the mucous membranes.

The good news is that modern disposable diapers do not contain natural rubber or latex, which are being replaced by spandex. Compared to latex, this synthetic polymer reduces the likelihood of skin irritation and discomfort, but there is still some risk. Since spandex is an irreplaceable component of disposable diapers – even ecologically clean diapers – in case of your baby having a negative reaction, you should consider cloth diapers.

7. PARABENS

Parabens are a class of preservatives which are used to improve the shelf-life of hygiene products. They include chemicals such as benzylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, heptylparaben, isobutylparaben, and isopropylparaben. These chemicals also serve as antibacterial agents which prevent the growth of microbes and bacteria.

It takes only 26 seconds for the vapor to be absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream. Such groups as pregnant women and babies are especially susceptible to the influence of parabens. Parabens in diapers can cause hormonal imbalances, and they are also genotoxic (which means they can damage genetic information in cells, causing mutations and potentially leading to cancer). Parabens also tend to decrease sperm production by disrupting the function of androgens.

We recommend choosing disposable diapers that disclose that they are 100% free of parabens.

8. TRIBUTYLTIN (TBT)

Today, many disposable diapers contain tin in various forms, the most common of which is TBT (tributyltin). These substances are used in all kinds of industrial processes and are very harmful to the environment. Tributyltin is used in the adhesive of diapers and in the fluff pulp of the diaper’s core [5].

The substance tributyltin (TBT), used by some brands of disposable diapers to kill bacteria, is an extremely toxic substance that can actually disrupt hormone function and weaken the immune system, including neurotoxicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity, and endocrine disruption, and is considered a major environmental pollutant.

You are much less likely to encounter these substances in disposable diapers if you are using environmentally friendly diapers, as brands that specialize in green diapers tend to pay more attention to both your baby’s health and the environment.

9. VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (VOCs)

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a variety of chemicals that can off-gas from certain materials. Disposable diapers often contain these substances.

There are a variety of negative health effects which could harm your baby in the short term and the long term. According to research from the Association for the Protection of the Environment, VOCs can cause nose, eye, and throat irritation, in addition to skin irritation, headache, depression of the liver, kidneys and nervous system, nosebleeds, dizziness, immunity disruption and shortness of breath. They are also linked to several kinds of cancer 6].

Many VOCs are odorless and easily overlooked, but generally, diaper brands that follow good environmental practices are much less likely to manufacture VOC-containing disposable diapers.

Used Materials. Opt for disposable diapers made with safer methods and eco-friendly and natural materials. This will reduce the risk of an allergic reaction, diaper rash, and overall exposure to harmful chemicals.
