Planning your baby’s nursery is one of the most exciting and important things you will want to do before your little one arrives. The baby’s crib is the main and central part of any nursery. Your little one will spend up to 16 hours a day in the crib, so it should be cozy, comfortable – and most importantly – a safe place to rest.

Unfortunately, even cribs may pose a danger to your baby’s health, as they can be contaminated with toxic chemicals like VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), formaldehyde, phthalates, flame retardants, PVC, PFAS chemicals, BPA, and heavy metals.

The good news is that nowadays you can easily avoid exposure to those chemicals by becoming aware of all hidden places where the toxins may be present: from wood materials to paints and finishes used in manufacturing cribs.

We did in-depth research for you on the safest non-toxic cribs available today, because our children deserve a crib that is both good-looking and totally safe and healthy.

Why Is It So Important To Choose A Non-Toxic Crib?

Baby in a Crib

Your baby’s nursery must be the safest place in your home, as you and your child will spend most of your time there, especially at the beginning.

Furniture made of cheap composite materials, plywood, or MDF, with bad glue and harmful paints, emits a variety of harmful chemicals into the air, which creates an unhealthy environment for babies who are much more vulnerable to toxins and chemicals than adults because their bodies are still developing, they are less able to detoxify their bodies, and they have more surface area on their skin that toxins can penetrate [1].

Also, it is not a surprising fact that most babies chew on their cribs. Babies use their mouths to analyze the world, and we as parents need to make sure that all stuff they can potentially chew isn’t full of harmful toxins.

By choosing a non-toxic crib (together with other furniture items for your nursery) you can limit your baby’s exposure to nasty chemicals that may negatively impact their health now and in the future.

How Baby Cribs Can Be Toxic?

A crib’s toxicity may depend on the materials it is made of.

In general, most cribs are made from wood and coated with wood finish and paint.

Let’s look into details of each kind of material so you know where toxins can be hidden and what to pay attention to when making your choice.

1. Wood

Wooden cribs can be made of Solid Wood (Hardwoods and Softwoods) and Engineered Wood.

Solid Wood

This is a natural, single piece of wood that is obtained by cutting down mature trees.

Solid wood can be of two types: hardwood and softwood.

  1. Hardwood. This type of solid wood is produced by angiosperm trees that have broad leaves and reproduce through flowers, such as oak, birch, maple, walnut, cherry, etc. These trees need a longer time to grow, and are more durable and expensive compared to the softwood.
  1. Softwood is wood from gymnosperm trees such as spruces, pines, white cedar, juniper, etc. They grow faster than hardwood trees, have a comparatively low density, and are less expensive.

Both hardwoods and softwoods, as natural, biological materials, contain and emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are collectively referred to as “wood VOCs”. But hardwoods give off fewer VOCs than softwoods. That is why choosing baby furniture made from hardwood is considered a better and healthier choice.

Engineered Wood

Engineered wood, or composite wood, is a man-made product. It is made from sawmill waste leftovers from making solid wood lumber together with adhesives (glues) through chemical or heat processes to form one single sheet. This is a low-end, low-value product.

The most common forms of  composite woods available for making furniture are:

  • Plywood
  • Particleboard
  • MDF (medium-density fibreboard) is the highest formaldehyde-emitting pressed wood product, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Veneered boards

The chemicals used in manufacturing man-making engineered woods are toxic for babies – extremely toxic!

There are two potential chemicals that releases from engineered woods that may impact your baby’s health:

  1. During the manufacturing of engineered wood, formaldehyde-based glue is used to put the layers or wood composites together. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen that is linked with cancer, allergies, asthma, and can irritate and burn the eyes, nose, throat, and skin.
  1. VOCs (volatile organic compounds) [2]. They are a large group of chemicals that “off-gas” into the indoor air we breathe. They are invisible and many of them have no odor (smell). Individuals who’ve been poisoned by a large amount of VOCs may develop damage to the central nervous system, liver or kidney damage, headaches, eye, nose, or throat problems, and some VOCs can also cause cancer if someone is exposed to them for a long period of time.

Baby’s crib that is made from composite wood can pollute indoor air quality and have serious negative health impacts. Always prioritize natural solid wood without the use of glues vs toxic engineered wood.

2. Wood Finish

A wood finish is a transparent coat applied as a liquid on the wood’s surface to protect it from swelling and cracking, wear, moisture, stains, dirt, oils and aging. Protecting wooden cribs with a finish will keep it looking good for years to come.

All finishes contain solvents (one or more). They serve to dissolve the resins in the finish and to reduce the viscosity or “thin” the finish, making it easier to apply.

Some of these solvents (petroleum- and chemical-based) are extremely harmful as they emit toxic chemicals (such as harmful VOCs) which contribute to air pollution in your home and can cause serious health problems [3].

To be on the safe side, when buying baby furniture choose items that are Greenguard Gold-certified, as these have been tested and scientifically proven to have low chemical emissions (low levels of VOCs).

3. Paint

Most baby cribs are painted with paints to enhance color and match the nursery room’s decor.

The harmful chemicals emitted by some paints can cause many health problems ranging from headaches to dizziness and even nervous system damage [4].

The most common type of chemical that paint can release is VOCs. Volatile Organic Compounds increase pollution levels. Those carbon-based chemicals evaporate at room temperature and have been found to cause a wide range of adverse health effects, especially in young children. VOCs are known to cause health problems in the short-term such as headaches, dizziness, and fatigue, and problems in the long-term such as nervous system, kidney, or liver damage.

We recommend finding unfinished and unpainted cribs (Green Cradle, Baby Eco Trends, Oeuf, Ikea Sniglar).

If you want to buy a baby crib that is painted, choose the one that only uses non-toxic, “no-VOCs” or “Zero-VOCs” paint.

The EPA claims that water-based paints (also called latex or acrylic paints) emit fewer chemicals than oil-based ones.

What To Look For When Buying Non-Toxic Cribs?

A Crib

When making your choice on what crib to buy for your little one, please pay close attention to the following:

1. Type of Wood

We recommend buying baby cribs that are made only with solid wood (hardwood is preferable to softwood). Try to avoid engineered or composite wood as these materials have glues and adhesives that may be toxic.

2. Only Non-Toxic (Low-VOCs) Paints And Finishes

As we mentioned previously, there are a lot of unhealthy and toxic finishes and paints used while manufacturing baby furniture. Always pay attention and check if the crib you’re looking into is made with low or no-VOCs natural finishes and non-toxic water-based paints that are safe for kids.

3. GreenGuard GOLD Certification

To be on the safe side, we recommend buying only pieces of baby furniture that have GreenGuard Gold Certification, meaning it is free of toxic chemicals and completely safe for your baby.

GreenGuard GOLD certified cribs have lower or no chemical emissions – formaldehyde especially – and have been tested for more than 10,000 chemicals. This certification ensures that the baby crib is safe to use indoors.

Types Of Baby Cribs

It is important to know all your options while making your decision on the type of baby crib you need.

First, try to answer the following questions:

  1. How much space do you have?
  2. Is portability important? Do you plan to move the baby’s crib from room to room?
  3. Do you plan to transform the crib into a toddler bed?

Read below about main three types of cribs that will fit all your requirements:

  1. Standard Сrib. Traditional in style and design, this first bed for your baby is intended to comfortably fit your child during the first 18–24 months of their life.
  1. Convertible Cribs are designed to transform into a toddler bed as your child grows.
  1. Portable or Mini Cribs are an alternative to standard cribs when you have limited space in your room. They are very light, and some can be moved to a corner or folded up easily.

If you decide to choose a mini crib, you need to monitor your child’s growth to make sure that they can still comfortably sleep in the crib, as your baby will outgrow it quickly.

Something To Keep In Mind

We only like 2 models: The Wave Crib and The Candy Cloud Crib.

Both of these are mostly made from sustainably harvested solid Brazilian pine, only the mattress support is made from eco-engineered wood.

But because their mini cribs are made with a non standard size, you will not find the correct size mattress in Naturepedic and Newton brands. The best decision will be to buy (with additional cost) the Nestig x Lullaby Earth Breeze Air Mini-mattress separately. It is made of food-grade low density polyethylene with polypropylene batting, free from flame retardants, latex, phthalates, vinyl/PVC, formaldehyde, etc. and, most importantly, it is Greenguard Gold certified.

💡 ▪️ Once you place your order with Nestig, you will need to wait a few weeks. Under the “Add to Cart” button on each crib you can see the approx date when it will be shipped.
